Typograph – a no images WordPress Theme

Typograph 0.8.6 Now Available

In the wake of the problems caused by WordPress 2.8 I have released a new and updated version of Typograph. In addition to fixing the technically small but hugely damaging code conflict from 0.8.5 I’ve also fixed a number of other problems:

  • Search results now display pages properly
  • all code related to the sidebar tabbed box has been moved to tabbedBox.php
  • general code clean up has made the theme lighter

In particular this means now all you have to do to disable the sidebar tabbed box is to remove or comment out the php include found on line 4 in sidebar.php.

Typograph 0.8.6 is now available from the WordPress Theme Directory.

Critical update for WordPress 2.8

It was brought to my attention last night that there is a critical conflict between the popular Typograph theme and the new WordPress 2.8. Knowing that most Typograph users will update their WordPress installation in the coming days finding the reason for the conflict and a solution was a number one priority and I am happy to say I’ve already created a fix that solves the problem. A full upgrade of Typograph will be published later today but for current installations the fix consists of just replacing one file. Here are instructions:

Upgrade Typograph to work under WordPress 2.8

  1. Download and unzip the archive with the fixed functions.php file here.
  2. Access your Typograph theme directory in your hosted WordPress installation (should be under www.yoursitename.com/wp-content/themes/Typograph).
  3. Delete the old functions.php file under the Typograph theme directory.
  4. Upload the new functions.php file to the Typograph theme directory.

I have tested this critical fix and it works.

Major update – fixed tabbed box and threaded comments

The 0.8.5 version of Typograph was created with two goals in mind: Fix the many plug-in conflicts reported and add threaded comments. To fix the problems the NicEdit HTML editor for the comments is gone (so no more fancy HTML editing for now, sorry. I’m looking for a solution) and I have rebuilt the tabbed box from scratch using the MooTools library instead. Extensive testing with numerous plug-ins shows that at least as far as I know the conflicts are no longer there and everything works properly. If you do find any more conflicts, please tell me so I can fix them.

Typograph threaded comments

One of the really cool new features in WordPress 2.7 is threaded comments. Basically this means that when you comment on a posting you can answer other comments and your answer will appear “nested” within the comment you answered rather than on the bottom of the page. This is a very cool feature that you had to use a plug-in for in the past. Upgrading to threaded comments was quite a challenge. There is very little information about it around and it took me a while to figure it out. Luckily I came across two blogs with instructions and it is these two approaches combined that formed the basis for the threaded comments in Typograph. These were Chris Harrison’s blog (for styling) and Otto’s blog for backend code. Thanks go out to the both of them for excellent tutorials and to Otto for some extra help via e-mail.

Important note for WordPress 2.7 Coltrane users:

With the release of WordPress 2.7 Coltrane came the introduction of a new template tag called post_class(). Interestingly I have been using a custom template tag by that exact name for a long time in my themes including the free Typograph. That means when users of Typograph upgrade to WordPress 2.7 Coltrane a conflict occurs between the WordPress functions.php file and the Typograph functions.php file because both define the same template tag.

The Typograph theme has now been updated to resolve these issues and the new WP 2.7 Coltrane compliant version is avaialbe from the WordPress Theme Library:

Introducing Typograph – a no images WordPress Theme

I’ve been planning to launch a proper free WordPress theme for some time now but there have always been major projects in the way. This week I had some extra time so I sat down and developed the Typograph theme which is now available for anyone to use. For free.

The theme is as simple as possible with clear separation between the content and the sidebar, a calm gray and white design with popping red links, a tabbed sidebar box with navigation, search and other important elements and some other styling for increased readability and better navigation. It complies with the new WordPress standard elements like image captions and Gravatars and even has a customizable ad space directly under the first post on the front page. And last but not least, Typograph is fully XHTML and CSS standards compliant.

No images

Right before I began the design of this theme, Spyremag published an article about 5 ways to break your design habits, one of which was to design a site using no images. Seeing as I’ve become somewhat obsessed with CSS over the last year it seemed only appropriate to follow this advice and create a no-images theme. Not only would this be a bit of a challenge because I ususually use a lot of images to make my designs more vibrant, but it would also put my coding skills and my understsanding of WordPress themes to the test.

Styled from scratch

Over the last several months I’ve been refining and customizing a copy of the Sandbox WordPress theme to develop an ideal platform for quick and easy WordPress theme design. The plan is to create a “God Theme” if you will that has all the bells and whistles installed and ready to go so that new theme design is quick and efficient. To put the alpha version of this foundation theme to the test I used it to style Typograph from scratch.

Tabbed box navigation

When I created the new theme for Design is Philosophy I spent quite a bit of time developing and perfecting a JQuery and CSS based tabbed sidebar box that would contain navigation as well as other useful information for the visitor. For Typograph I further developed the tabbed box and isolated it in it’s own file to simplify customization for the user. It can also easily be deactivated by commenting out a single line of code in the sidebar.php template. The tabbed box contains navigation for pages and categories along with an about section, RSS link and search box by default. It takes standard WordPress tags and can be customized to include pretty much anything by editing the tabbedBox.php file found in the theme directory.

  1. Hey there,

I’m reading some people have had this problem before but I can’t figure out a way to fix it: looking at the theme in Firefox or IE6, the sidebar drops beneath the content, while in newer versions of IE as well as Safari, everything looks right. Do you know if there’s anything to be done about this?

    Thanks!

  2. Thanks for Typograph theme. Now I read that new release (0.86) is avalaible. How can I upgrade to 0.86 without lost all my customizing? P.s. I’m using 2.7.1 wp version.

  3. Hi Morten –

For some reason, using any secondary sidebar widgets through the WP widgets pane wipes out the rest of the sidebar. Do you know what I can do to prevent that?

    Thanks!

  4. this typograph theme is really something. looks awesome. but I have a problem while using it with 2.8.4 WP. After installing a skicky post plugin and then adding my sidebar Archive widget the widget panel become broken. there should be a problem in css file but I can’t find where. please advise.

  7. Free hosting isn’t always bad. I run a couple of websites and needed
a dedicated server for them,I know how bad the economy is right now
and my passion for small business. I decided to create a free web host
for people. It has all the perks of paid hosting but no cost. I don’t,
and do not plan on putting ads on customer’s websites.

  8. Finally someone who can write a good blog ! . This is the kind of information that is useful to those want to increase their SERP’s. I loved your post and will be telling others about it. Subscribing to your RSS feed now. Thanks

  9. I have run into a bug with this theme. It seems that when logged in i can choose a single post to view and everything is fine. But then when i log out and click on a single post to view my whole sidebar renders underneath the post. I played with editing the single.php file and was able to mirror this problem ie do the opposite, but i can’t figure out how to fix it so the sidebar stays put when logged in or logged out.

I like this theme a lot, but with a problem like this, it’s not usable.

    ???

  11. I cant get Typography to work properly with my 2.6 wp installation. Frontpage ok but when I click on a post de right col disappears. Also comments wont work. No form appears.

Is my wp too old for the theme? Is there an older version of the theme that will work? I really like the look!

  12. This is really and interesting theme, with all the great free wordpress themes available, its a wonder anyone would pay for a theme for their site. I will definitely be giving this one a workout on my site soon.

Long live free WP themes and nice site by the way. Is this a custom theme or a free one that you use on this site?

  13. LOVE the Typograph theme. Incredibly versatile.

However… when I click a post to read the full article, the sidebar disappears from the right and repositions itself below the full article text. Is this supposed to happen? I’d prefer the sidebar to always be at the right.

    1. Major bug with the sidebar dropping to the bottom when viewing a single post UNLESS I also happen to be logged in to the admin. When I’m logged in to the Admin, it works great. When I’m not logged in… sidebar drops to the bottom. Weird.

      1. @George It’s weird how that happens to some people and not others. The sidebar is of course meant to be hovering to the right the whole time. It’s been a while since I looked into this last time but I think it can have something to do with text/image elements in the sidebar that are a fraction too wide. Like a really long word with no breaks. Do you happen to have a live version of the site running that I can take a look at and debug?

          1. BRILLIANT!!! Thank you so much, Morten. Perfect fix.

And, again, this is my favorite WP theme bar none. Many great ones there, but none like yours. Thank you for such good work.

            George

          2. No problem George. Just sorry it took so long – I have way too much on my plate and neither my cloning machine nor the time machine are currently operational so things take way longer than intended.

        1. Hi Morton, I’m sorry, but insert the in single.php don’t solve the problem – it inverse it: unlogged users now see the correct sidebar at the right, but logged users see the sidebar at the bottom. The left -Tag must come from comments.php or others…?

          1. Hi Morten!
            I have a same problem! I insert

            between

but now unlogged users see the correct sidebar at the right, but logged users see the sidebar at the bottom.
            Please Help!

  14. Is there a way to change the number of postings that display on a page, reducing it from the default 10 to say, 6?

My client uses lots of widgets and embedded videos, and it’s made the page load very slowly.

  15. Hi,

The typograph theme is beautiful and I really want to use it, but the problem I’m having in firefox stops me from implementing it on my site. Here’s what’s happening: the right sidebar drops below the main column on every page, logged in or logged out. I tried the fix you suggested to add in the single.php file, but it didn’t work. Any other ideas would be great!

  16. Hi! I just loved the Theme but i need some answers.

    1. How can I change the ABOUT paragraph and put my text on?

    Please tell me!!

    1. George: To change the About (or any other section) in the drop-box in the sidebar you need to edit the file called tabbedBox.php in the theme folder. It’s pretty clear what section you need to edit when you open it. Change the text, save the file and upload it to your server.

  17. Typograph is a Great theme.
I would like to do some customisations to it, please could you tell me the license you are distributing it as?

  18. Hi, I am wondering about how to feed an ad banner into the space below the first post. Is there a function in the admin panel or do I have to paste eg. google-code into the archive.php? Besides: Great looking theme! Thanks – Christoph

  23. i am absolutely in love with this template but how would you get rid of the sidebars? i too love to publish photos & as this was not meant to sustain photography, how would you remove the sidebars to increase image size?

i know this is a lot to ask but i am desperate as no one else could aid me.
    thanks

  24. Hello and Thank you for creating a great theme. First, I think you named it correct. The typeface is excellent, and no I have not seen the Helvitica documentary yet. Second, I read here that this is a no pictures theme. Ooops… I’ve used lots of images and I think it looks fine. Third, Google Webmaster has reported to me that I have 22 broken links on the site as a result of the tabbed box. I’ve tried several things with the tabbedbox php and am unable to correct.

    Better Description of Problem:

PreCondition: User is reading a post in full or single item post view. The site is using persistent URL.

Error: When you mouse over the menu items the URL includes the URL for the full item post and a reference to the menu item such as Home or Categories. When there is no such directory.

Thoughts: I was thinking of nofollow to be kind to Google bot but I’d rather fix it up.

    Any help would be appreciated.

If you’d like a donation for the effort, I’d be happy if you could just send me a quick note.

Cheers and have a great day.

  28. Tnx for this theme; the best ever (i love minimal, typographical theme’s).

Gave it some twist on my own blog, with your permission ;-)

Just having problems with Flash; the JW Player refuses to show up (the annoying this is; it worked the first couple of days. suddenly, after installing some plugins that had nothing to do with Flash, whatsoever, it was gone. Can’t find the problem>

    Just thanx. It’s great!

  29. So far this theme is working very well for me — and I’d be happy to make a contribution. But first I have to figure out a way to add the year to the date on the main index page, so that it reads something like

    OCT
    11
    2011

And then the comments link below.

Can you tell me how to do this? I’m pretty comfortable with WP/simple php but for the life of me, I can’t figure this one out.
